Where does Sindhi come from?
Sindhi is a member of the Indic branch of the Indo-Iranian sub-group of the Indo-European (Aryan) family of languages. The modern Aryan languages are considered to have evolved from Sanskrit, the ancient language of the Indian sub-continent.

In about 2000 BC, Indo-Iranians migrated eastwards, away from the other Indo-European peoples, and by about 1000 BC, the two language branches, Indic (also called Indo-Aryan) and Iranian, had probably separated, with Iranian being spoken in Iran and Afghanistan and Indic developing in north-western India. Sindhi is related to Urdu and has some vocabulary drawn from Arabic, Persian, and some of the Dravidian languages. In Pakistan it is written in the Arabic script with several additional letters to accommodate special sounds.

How many people speak Sindhi?
About 18 million people speak Sindhi.

In how many countries?
Sindhi is spoken in Pakistan by about 15 million people in the province of Sind. It is also one of the constitutional languages of India where about 2.5 million people speak it. The largest Sindhi-speaking city is Hyderabad in Pakistan.
