Where does Norwegian come from?
Norwegian is one of the Scandinavian languages, which form a branch of the Germanic languages, in turn a part of the Indo-European family.

Due to significant dialectal changes that occurred during the Viking age, Old Norse (or Old Norwegian), a language from which modern Norwegian is derived, came into being and was spread by Norwegian migration to Iceland and other areas in the North Atlantic.

How many people speak Norwegian?
The Norwegian language is spoken by virtually all of Norway's 4 million inhabitants. It is also spoken in other Scandinavian countries and North America.

Norwegian Culture

Norwegian Art
For its relatively small population, a disproportionately large number of internationally renowned artists have come from Norway. Among them, are painter Edvard Munch, famous for his work, 'The Scream', sculptor Gustav Vigeland and playwright Henrik Ibsen

Norwegian Food and Drink
Traditional Norwegian dishes include 'laks' (grilled or smoked salmon), 'reker' (boiled shrimp) and 'torsk' (cod). Pickled herring and a sweet brown goat's cheese called 'geitost' are commonly eaten for breakfast.

Virtual prohibition of alcohol is standard in many rural Norwegian communities

Norwegian Attractions
Oslo: The capital city and undisputed cultural centre of Norway, Oslo is remarkably low-key. Old and new architecture mingles with Oslo's numerous museums, galleries, monuments and parks. Sites of interest include Akershus Fortress, a medieval fortress and castle built around 1300, and the Munch Museum, which contains more than 5000 drawings and paintings bequeathed to the city by Norway's most famous artist.

Risør: This small fishing harbour is one of Norway's most picturesque villages. It's popular with artists and tourists, and is a summer hangout for Norway's yacht lovers. A nearby island is Stangholmen, which has an old lighthouse with a restaurant and bar.

Central Norway: The central part of Norway has the country's highest mountains, largest glacier and spectacular fjords. The region is the top destination for almost all travellers to the country. There are also resorts, a national park, and road trips through Norway's breathtaking scenery.

"I bought your Learn Malay CD today - I've only just begun, but I wanted to say how much I am enjoying it. I studied Malay from a book all day yesterday, making some 25 pages of notes on grammar and vocab, but I remember more from your CD from just an hour!" - James Bryce
