Where does Hebrew come from?
The Hebrew language is a Semitic language, originally adopted by the Israelites, when they took possession of the land of Canaan west of the Jordan River in Palestine.

Ancient Hebrew is the language of the Bible. This was succeeded by Mishnaic Hebrew, an intermediary form, in about the 3rd century BC. Modern Hebrew was developed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

How many people speak Hebrew?
Today about 3 million people speak Hebrew, either as their mother tongue, adopted or religious language.

In how many countries?
Today it is the principal language of the State of Israel, but is also spoken in the Gaza Strip, in the United States of America, and the West Bank.

Hebrew Culture

Hebrew Food and Drink
The various cuisines of Immigrants into Israel have all had their influence on Israeli food. Yemeni Jewish food features flame grilled meats, stuffed vegetables and offals, while Eastern European Jewish food includes dishes such as schnitzel, goulash, gefilte fish and blintzes. Religious laws tend to influence Israeli eating habits. Jews cannot eat dairy and meat products together, birds and fish must be kosher, and neither Muslims nor Jews can eat pig.

Orthodox Jews tend to abstain from alcohol, so tea with mint and lots of sugar, and coffee are most peoples' beverages of choice.

Hebrew Attractions
Jerusalem: Jerusalem is sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians. It is, however, as much a modern populated city as a religious concept. The city is divided into three parts: the walled Old City, where most of the sights are; the predominantly Arab East Jerusalem; and the rapidly expanding new city, known as West Jerusalem. The Old City is also divided, into Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim quarters.

Bethlehem: It's hardly a surprise that almost everything in Bethlehem has a nativity theme. Indeed, the Church of the Nativity is this holy town's reason for being. It is built over the spot where Jesus is said to have been born, and is one of the world's oldest working churches. Rachel's Tomb, on the edge of town, is one of Judaism's most sacred shrines, and is also revered by Muslims and Christians.

The Dead Sea: The water of the Dead Sea is replete with vital minerals, so floating in it is not only fun but good for one's health. There are also other attractions in the surrounding area. Ein Gedi is an attractive oasis, with waterfalls, pools, tropical vegetation and desert wildlife, while Masada is a much-visited fortress atop a sheer-sided plateau offering great views.

Galilee: This is where Jesus did most of his preaching and miracle making. It's also Israel's lushest region with the Sea of Galilee nearby. Nazareth, Jesus' childhood home, is a popular destination for pilgrims. Tiberias, on the western shore of Lake Galilee, is somewhere to take in history at the tombs of ancient sages, and enjoy the town's famous hot springs. The country's most extensive archaeological site, Beit She'an, is also here.
