Where does Breton come from?
Breton is a Celtic language spoken mainly in Brittany and in the region of Loire-Atlantique in France. It is closely related to Cornish and has also French and Italian influences.

The first printed text in Breton was a passion play that appeared beginning of the 16th century. Breton literature become more popular in the 19th century and continues to flourish today.

There are a number of radio stations that broadcast in Breton, and you can also find a number of weekly and monthly magazines published in the language.

Breton is spoken by about 365,000 people, of which about 240,000 speak it fluently.

Bretons very often celebrate their love of music and dance at Festou Noz (night festivals) held in the open air, with dancers accompanied by singers and pipe players.

Bretons enjoy a staggering choice of traditional pubs and pancake houses, where pancakes with chocolate or goats cheese are washed down with either cider or beer.

Brittany has a fantatstic selection of markets selling speciality bread, cheese, fish and meats. They are popular venues with locals and tourists alike. Les Leics is certainly one of the largest French markets but with a small village-like atmosphere.
